Day #16 of National Novel Writing Month actually began shortly after my NaNoWriMo class at The Loft on Thursday. After allowing myself the freedom to essentially free-write by hand for fifteen days, I decided It would be best to pause and regroup at this midpoint. I needed go back to my original, typewritten drafts of the novel’s first 25 pages and redefine the structure and point-of-view that I’m going to use going forward. Using a combination of material written both before and after November 1st, I rewrote and edited 3,059 words! Similar to Tango: The Tale of an Island Dog, this new novel will be written in a multiple point-of-view, with a guiding omniscient narrator. For the next fifteen days, I plan to proceed in a more chapter-like, chronological order of narration; in other words, fewer words, more intention and craft.

About the image: I found this postcard at Excelsior Bay Books last summer. The artist is Quint Buchholz and titled, in German, “Weh dem, der aus der Reihe tanzt.” According to my husband, whose first language is German, this means, “Woe to him who dances out of line” or “Woe to him who dances to a different drummer.” It’s no coincidence that these words play nicely into themes I’m exploring in my story. Side note: The image was used for the cover of a German children’s book written by Ludwig Harig (for those of you who are looking for something new to Google.)
